Tips for Practicing Career and Self-Development

Organizations value employees who proactively develop themselves and their careers through continual personal and professional learning, awareness of their strengths and weaknesses and navigation of career opportunities. This career and self-development is an essential career readiness skill.

You can practice this in the following ways:

  • Show an awareness of your own strengths and areas for development.
  • Identify areas for continual growth while pursuing and applying feedback.
  • Be conscientious and punctual with your work schedule.
  • Maintain a high ethical standard in all you say and do.
  • Assume duties or positions that will help you progress professionally. Seek and embrace development opportunities.
  • Professionally advocate for yourself and others.
  • Establish and maintain mentor relationships with people who can help you professionally.
  • Display curiosity; voluntarily participate in further education, training or other developmental events.
